The term dementia is derived for the latin demens which essentially means loss of the mind. It is a general term. There are many different causes of dementia. The commonest cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease.

Here in the west of Scotland vascular dementia is probably the second most common cause of dementia.

Alzheimer's disease was described in 1906 and the last century has seen huge advances in our understanding of the condition.

The hope with current research is that with the development of better and more effective treatments for Alzheimer's disease that it can either be halted or cured.
